What is the Louisiana Alligator Tag Lottery?
To regulate the harvesting of alligators in the state, the Louisiana Alligator Tag Lottery provides the opportunity for a designated number of hunters to harvest a set number of alligators each year. Originally, these harvests occurred on public lakes, but as of 2008, the lottery has incorporated Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). Since then, the program has continued to expand to include more hunters and more public areas throughout the state.
Residents can apply for an application to be included in the lottery, and successful applicants are entered in a random computer drawing that occurs by August of each year.
How many hunters and gators are included in the lottery?
The program currently allows approximately 325 resident alligator hunters to harvest about 850 alligators on over 40 WMAs in Louisiana.
How do I enter the lottery?
Residents interested in entering the lottery must complete an application with the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries. A limited number of applications are available each year, and a deadline is set each season for acceptance of these applications. The deadline is usually around the first week of July. Each applicant may apply for only one WMA or public lake.
Who can enter the lottery?
Applicants for the lottery drawing must be residents of Louisiana. They must also be at least 16 years old and meet hunter education requirements. A $5 fee must be included with the application submission.
What are the education requirements for entering the lottery?

Those born after September 1, 1969 must complete an approved hunter education course or be supervised by a person who has a valid hunting license, was born before September 1, 1969, or is at least 18 years old and has completed an approved hunter education course.
