To regulate the harvesting of alligators in the state, the Louisiana Alligator Tag Lottery provides the opportunity for a designated number of hunters to harvest a set number of alligators each year. Originally, these harvests occurred on public lakes, but as of 2008, the lottery has incorporated Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs). Since then, the program has continued to expand to include more hunters and more public areas throughout the state.
Residents can apply for an application to be included in the lottery, and successful applicants are entered in a random computer drawing that occurs by August of each year.
